In some cases, the junction between two series of beds is smooth and represents a gently sloping old land surface, which slowly sank below sea level. As a result when the younger series of rocks were deposited on the older beds, each new bed in turn, as “c”, “b”, and “a” in the following figure encroached more and more on the old land surface. Unconformities of this type are known as the “overlap”.
