Hydrogeology

Hydrogeology is the study of groundwater, including its distribution, movement, and quality. It deals with the geological and hydrological factors that control the occurrence, movement, and quality of groundwater in the subsurface. Hydrogeologists study the physical, chemical, and biological processes that govern the behavior of groundwater, as well as its interactions with other geologic materials and the surface environment. This field is important in understanding water resources and managing groundwater systems, including the assessment of water availability, the management of contaminated groundwater, and the design and operation of groundwater-based water supplies.
